One of the advantages of independent travel is that with a little bit of advance planning, the traveller has a better chance of actively exploring and learning about local culture, rather than passively listening to a tour guide’s standardised presentation about the destination.

The difference in approach between group and independent travel can be seen, for example, in the way Paris’ café culture is experienced. A touring company might show, from a bus, one or two of the city’s legendary cafés, but only the independent traveller can dive into this scene to discover the passion that some Parisians have for a really good cup of coffee!
